Goa Cong. file plea in HC to disqualify Rane

first_imgPanaji: The Congress on Friday filed a disqualification petition in the Bombay High Court at Goa against Health Minister Vishwajit Rane. The hearing has been fixed for May 16.The decision was announced by Goa Pradesh Congress president Luizinho Faleiro at a press conference on Friday. Fifteen Congress MLAs, except for Pratapsingh Rane — senior party leader and father of Vishwajit Rane — along with AICC secretary and Goa in charge Chellakumar signed the petition. It sought disqualification of Mr. Rane for failing to be present in the House and vote as per the party whip on the confidence motion tabled by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in March. The same evening, Mr. Rane had resigned as Congress MLA. He was later inducted into the Parrikar Cabinet. Mr. Ramakant Khalap, chief of the Congress Media Cell, said, “Our contention is that if a member of the House is elected for a period of five years, can he defect and thereafter resign, contest election against the vacancy created after his resignation and come back to same House? The person who has defied the House which was elected by the people on a political party cannot come back to the same House.”Meanwhile, when questioned about the demand of a large number of Congress MLAs that he be replaced as Congress president, Mr. Faleiro said, “I will quit if it facilitates formation of a Congress government.”last_img
