FRISCO, Texas – McNeese’s Blake Elliott picks up the Southland Conference October Golfer of the Month Award, league officials announced Wednesday. After a combined nine rounds of play, Elliott registered a 69.2 stroke average over a trio of tournament appearances. Elliott opened the month of October at the Marquette Intercollegiate where he finished tied for 16th place among a field of 70 competitors. He then steadily lowered his score during his next two Invitationals before claiming his monthly accolade. Honorable Mention: William Holcomb, Sam Houston State; Angelo Leyvani, Stephen F. Austin; Baker Stevenson, Nicholls October Golfer of the Month: Blake Elliott – Sr. – Liberty Hill, Texas Elliott won his first collegiate tournament in record fashion when he took home the championship at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in Manoa, Hawaii (Oct. 28-30). His tournament-winning performance tied a McNeese and Louisiana record after he shot a 63 in the second round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational. Prior to that, the Liberty Hill, Texas product finished second at the Quail Valley Collegiate, Oct. 14-16, with a 206 over three rounds of play. During the month of October, Elliott shot under par in seven of his nine rounds, while also shooting in the 60’s for five of those rounds. The award marks the first Golfer of the Month honor for Elliott during his career at McNeese. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots. Southland Athletes of the Month are presented by MidSouth Bank.
