Paul McCartney has half a century’s worth of experience when it comes to the process of picking out the artwork featured on and inside his albums. Deciding on visual styles for content aimed at young children, their parents, and librarians, however—well that’s new territory for McCartney altogether. Yet, he’s managed to successfully work alongside illustrator and former Pixar Animation Studios intern Kathryn Durst on the art design to his forthcoming debut children’s book, Hey Grandude!, which is scheduled to arrive on September 5th via Puffin Books. McCartney took to his website and social media pages on Thursday to share the cover art and various character illustration designs for the book, which features a dapper-looking Paul with that trademark Hofner electric bass of his. While the new images shared on Thursday seem to indicate that McCartney will have some sort of role in the story’s narrative, the titular magic granddad—or “Grandude,” as the title hilariously references—will be a fictional character. In the new images, Grandude is seen surrounded by some gleefully onlooking grandchildren, who are called “Chillers” in the story. Kathryn Durst also designed her own animated character, who can be seen doodling away in her own artwork below.Hey Grandude!
