First Methodist Church, Monrovia Crowns Charles A. Minor Father of the Year

first_imgMr. Charles A. Minor, former Liberian Ambassador to the United States and currently Chairman of the Board of Tax Appeals was last Sunday crowned Father of the Year by the First United Methodist Church, one of the nation’s oldest churches (1822). Mr. Minor was accompanied to the occasion by his wife Comfort, the mother of their three children, Charles (Chuck), Marcia and the youngest, Esi Minor, who predeceased them. The couple was married in First Church on July 18, 1970.President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a staunch Methodist herself, was among hundreds who graced last Sunday’s occasion. In his sermon, the Dean of Trinity Cathedral, the Rev. Dr. Herman Browne, urged each in the audience to strive to be “a friend of God,” in the same way Father Abraham was. Abraham was so much a friend of God that old Abe did not think twice to honor God’s directive that Abraham sacrifice his son Isaac, the only son by his wife Sarah. But God knew that Abraham truly loved Him as a true and trusted friend, and saved Isaac at the last minute by ordering Abraham not to kill the boy, and went on to provide a lamb for the sacrifice.Dr. Browne said we should all strive to be friends of God because He alone, along with His Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit, has the power to be our friend in every way and circumstance and whom we can trust to get us out of every possible situation, especially when the situation is one into which we got ourselves. As a mark of appreciation for the honor done him as Father of the Year, Ambassador Minor has undertaken to build the Siafa Keh Library and Multi-purpose Building at the J.J. Roberts Memorial Elementary School in a village in Grand Cape Mount County, adjacent the Obasanjo Poultry Farm on the highway to Robertsport. The school was erected as a mission outreach of First Church, under the leadership of its senior pastor, the Rev. Dr. Erlene P. Thompson.Ambassador Minor and his family decided to erect the building, for which he, along with his wife, the First Church Men and a few friends of the Minors broke ground last Saturday.Mr. Minor pledged that the US$35,000 building will be completed within the next eight months. Charles A. Minor is the son of the late Methodist pastor and Mrs. E.B. Minor. Charles briefly attended the Booker Washington Institute in Kakata before entering the College of West Africa (CWA), where he earned his high school diploma. He later entered the University of Liberia where he graduated, then pursued higher education in Management and Finance in the United States. But from boyhood in Sinoe, Charles has been active in student, youth and church affairs, beginning with the Methodist Youth Fellowship in Sinoe and later Monrovia. He was an active member of the National Student Christian Council (NSCC), of which he became full time general secretary. He was also president of the National Youth Council and has always played an active role in the affairs of the United Methodist Church. An avid entrepreneur, after serving the Arthur D. Little Consultancy that helped build the capacity of the Central Bank of Ghana, Minor started his own firm in Accra, Consultant Management Enterprise (CME), which is still being operated there and in Liberia. He has also served as the Human Resource and Management Development Director of the African Management Services Company (AMSCO) in The Netherlands where he spent 10 years.Minor accepted an invitation of the Chairman of National Transitional Government of Liberia (NTGL) to serve as Liberian Ambassador to the United States. When Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected President of Liberia, she asked him to stay on as Ambassador to Washington, which he did with credit and distinction.Mr. Minor was instrumental in the establishment of the AFRILAND First Bank (Liberia) and is also involved in a number of other private business initiatives.
